Amphigouri

I opened my eyes, and saw a never-ending forest,
cut in half by a river
as quiet as the sky above.
On the river banks,
at the top of some massive trees,
creatures were looking at me.
Very amazed by the shadow
my feet were casting on them.
They quickly stopped being amazed, and started yelling,
or praying,
at me.
I did not understand what they were saying.
I knew who they were.
The Amphigouri.
I thought they were a legend,
told a long time ago by an old goose and very small and talkative boy resting on my sides.
The Amphigouri, or,
according to their dialect,
Those-Who-Shall-Not-Be-Understood.
Because plants, and animals, and stones, and clouds are easy to decifer
– their total control on the forest around and the river near-by was a living proof of their somewhat arrogant cosmogony -,
they simply consider intelligibility as a weakness.
And they forged a langage so deliberately complex, tangled and abstract, that
nobody,
even the wisest parrot,
even the most perseverant missionary,
even the oldest moutain,
can not understand it.
The only word they ever explained
- and the Amphigouri who did it
was consequently beaten to death -
was their name.
Amphigouri,
Those-Who-Shall-Not-Be-Understood.
